For this project I was tasked with improving the overall user experience for our keyboard and screen reader accessibility users on desktop for navigating messages. To date, this has been my most challenging yet rewarding project.

In the following case study I will talk about my time revamping the accessibility navigation for the Webex messaging area. Because of NDA I cannot go into too many specifics but I will talk about the process of initial ideation to design and testing to completion.

During the course of a 6 month period I was tasked with revamping our messaging accessibility experience from the ground up. Engineering was rewriting the messaging area from scratch and we used this as an opportunity to make clear improvements for our accessibility users. My main goal from this redesigns was to provide a more inclusive and user-friendly experience for users with different accessibility needs, such as those relying on keyboard navigation and screen readers. Our overall navigation of the messaging area left a lot to be desired and I saw oppurtunities for improvement.

Process

Process

For the initial kick off I reached out to accessibility experts within respective teams of Webex. There is a wealth of knowledge to learn from so It would have been a waste to not do so. The design process for this project relied heavy on conducting user testing and gathering feedback for the redesign of navigation with a screen reader. For this I built a prototype within a program called Protopie. It allowed me to create a high fidelity prototype that mimicked a screen reader by using text to speech while the user navigates the prototype. At first this felt like an outlandish idea but with the limitations of current prototyping tools for testing accessibility It was the only resort for testing our redesign before moving onto code.

Learnings

I had stated previous that this was my most difficult yet rewarding project to date, the reasons being I felt a huge pressure on the fact that Webex has such a diverse user base, it would be crucial to ensure that the platform is accessible to everyone, regardless of their abilities. But what I learnt was to trust the design process and let it guide you to through the user experience. I was able to test and iterate with navigation and designs with real users and to gather their feedback to loop back into the designs. We worked with customers throughout the process to get users Beta testing these designs and I found this crucial to the project and am grateful for working with such users. In the end the team that worked on this received a quality recognition award internally and this among the positive feedback from users when shipped only validated the feeling of how rewarding such a project can be!
